Home Cleaning Hacks and Products for Those 55+

Maintaining a clean and comfortable home is a timeless pursuit, and as homeowners enter their prime years, the focus often shifts towards efficiency and convenience. In this blog post, we'll explore a collection of home cleaning hacks and recommended products designed to make the cleaning process easier and more manageable for those in their prime.

Make a Switch to Microfiber

Toss your old dusting and cleaning cloths and replace them all with microfiber. The super-fine fibers used in the material makes it easy to trap dust, grime, and debris without needing harsh chemical cleansers. Since it is gentle on surfaces you can use microfiber for all kinds of cleaning jobs and throw it in the wash when you’re done.

Vinegar is Great on Glass

Skip the glass cleaner in favor of a one to one mixture of vinegar and water. This mixture cuts through grease and grime so it can be used on mirrors as well as glass cooktops. Spray it on and wipe away with a microfiber cloth for a sparkling finish.

Soak Your Showerheads and Faucets

Minerals in our water build up and form deposits on showerheads and faucets that interrupt the flow. Trying to scrub them away is hard work, and not very effective. Instead, use a simple acid like vinegar to dissolve the minerals.. Fill a plastic bag with vinegar and use a rubber band to secure it over your showerheads and faucets. Leave it to soak overnight then wipe away the leftover residue.

Robot Vacuum

Let a robot take care of daily maintenance for you. There are lots of robot vacuum options out there that will do the job, but our favorite versions are the iRobot Roombas with self-emptying bases. These smart devices pair to your cell phone allowing easy operation and maintenance. Program a daily route for your vacuum and keep your floors tidier without lifting a finger.

Lemons to Freshen Your Kitchen

Nothing smells quite as fresh and clean as bright, lemony citrus – especially in the kitchen. Put a few lemon slices along with some ice down your garbage disposal. Let it run with cold water for ten seconds  to loosen up any bits of remaining food and leave behind the smell of fresh lemon. Add some lemon slices to a a microwave-safe bowl with water, and microwave for a few minutes. The steam helps cut any grease inside your microwave and the lemon neutralizes leftover smells. Wipe out the inside of your microwave to remove any splatters.

Lint Rollers: Not Just for Clothes

If you have pets you probably already have a lint roller in your car, but have you ever used it for housekeeping? Lint rollers are a quick and efficient way to remove dust, pet hair, and other debris from any surface. They make dusting lampshades and window treatments a breeze.

Steam Mop

Using a steam mop is the easiest way to deep clean and sanitize hard surfaces. You can use a steam mop on all tile floors and backsplashes, sinks, tubs, and showers. Do not use a steam mop on hardwoods, but they are great for any type of vinyl or linoleum floors.

Natural All-Purpose Cleaner

There are plenty of natural cleaners to choose from in the store. You can also make your own by soaking the peel from 3 or 4 oranges in rubbing alcohol. Once the alcohol turns orange strain out the peel and fill the remaining space in the bottle with more rubbing alcohol. The result is a cleaning product that works on just about every surface and smells great without being filled with perfumes and dyes.
